Verrill Farm
Our farm consists of about 200 acres in Concord and Sudbury. One hundred acres are prime farmland and 100 acres are wildlife habitats, woodlands, and wetlands. Steve’s father and mother moved to Concord in 1918 and started a successful dairy business. In 1957, upon graduation from Cornell University, Steve assumed operation of the farm. In 1982, after years of planning and negotiations, about 200 acres were placed under an Agricultural Preservation Restriction, thus preventing development of this land. This long term commitment gave sharper focus to our agricultural enterprises.

In 1990, with mounting pressure on the dairy industry, Steve and Joan made the decision to sell their dairy herd. They then spent the next five years growing produce to be sold at local suburban farmer’s markets. This often involved making 6 to 7 trips to the markets per week to sell their crops! At the same time, the family operated a small pick your own vegetable garden at the site of the roadside tent on Wheeler Road in Concord.

After graduating from UMass Amherst, Steve and Joan’s daughter, Jennifer, began working in local restaurants in Concord and Rhode Island. Jennifer developed her interest in cooking and baking during this time. Upon returning to the family farm, a small bakery was built in the old milking parlor where the first of many Verrill Farm pies would be baked. At this time, our farm stand consisted of only a small roadside tent.

After growing tired of making the trips to farmer’s markets and having outgrown the confines of the roadside tent, plans were drawn up for a new farm stand which was built in 1995. This included a commercial kitchen where Jen and others made baked goods and prepared foods to go, the first farm stand in the area to do so! After a devastating fire in 2008, a new stand was built at the same location, featuring New England specialty foods, our own fresh produce in season, fresh flowers, gifts, prepared foods to go and the best homemade baked goods in town.

Jennifer’s husband, Tim is now part of the Verrill Farm team and their two daughters, Chloe and Grace make up the fourth generation of the family to help out on the farm.
