Midwest Perishables, Inc. (MPI) was established in 1983 as a wholesale meat distribution company in Madison, Wisconsin. With a leased 2000 square foot cooler, a small straight truck and a cargo van, MPI set out to sell beef, pork, and chicken to grocery stores and butcher shops across the state of Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. As the business grew it became necessary to seek out a new facility which led to the purchase of an 8000 square foot facility in 1986. This distribution center would see an office addition and two cooler additions in the years that followed.
In 1989 MPI Freight was established as a freight brokerage and refrigerated transport service specializing in less than load quantities in a just in time delivery format. With the addition of a contract with the Department of Public Instruction in 1991 to deliver to the school lunch programs throughout Wisconsin, the transportation category grew to over a 3,000,000 million pound a month division and continues strong today.
In 1996 MPI partnered with several quality companies to create its own private brand called Klondike Farms. Today the Klondike family of products include: Brats, natural casing wieners, ham, breakfast links and a variety of other quality products.
In 1999 MPI became the master distributor for Newly Weds Foods Witts seasonings for the state of Wisconsin. This added a full line of spices, custom blends sauces and cures as a diversification to the MPI product list.
With continued growth and further product line expansion, the decision was made in 2008 to acquire a 27,000 square foot distribution center on the eastside of Madison. Shortly after the move, construction began on a new storage freezer which allowed MPI to expand its services to include outside storage. This state of the art facility, along with 14 trucks on the road six days a week, will allow MPI to continue to deliver new and fresh products to its customers with the same quality service since its beginning.
